| "PONTIAC, Mich., Oct. 27. - Special. - Dead when it was born, and growing stiffer with rigor mortis in each succeeding year, the Sylvan Lake Inn was cremated today. "The structure was erected about a decade ago by M.H. Mills, when he and other Detroiters were fukk of enthusiasm over the project of establishing a great summer resort between this city and Orchard Lake. It cost about $20,000; it was insured for $12,000. "One man after another tried to make the inn pay... The last was A.C. Thompson, and he found that his efforts would be fruitless as long as he respected the law. This he admitted afterwards in court. Accordingly, he sold liquor without a license and kept a slot machine. For this he is serving a 90-day term in the Detroit house of correction." "When Thompson was sent to prison, Charles Church of Pontiac was sent over to take care of the place. He went to Chicago last Thursday, but returned last night. The fire started at noon today. "At last accounts the ruins of the inn were still blazing and a stong wind was carrying flames and embers toward the lighting plant on the grounds a short distance to the east, and threatening this also with destruction." |
